The Airfield Ground Lighting Design training features a general overview and introduction to AGL design as per international standards and covers detailed engineering competence including practical design exercises.


Please note the first part of this course is online and focuses on the theory. Some topics will be further developed during the in-person classroom training.

- Identify ICAO, FAA, EUROCONTROL, EASA, NATO, UK CAA, and STAC requirements for design.

- Describe how AGL systems enhance aircraft safety and airport operations under varying conditions.

- Demonstrate the ability to design and evaluate AGL systems that meet global and national standards.

Curriculum content

  • Discover the airfield ground lighting business! This module will introduce you to the world of airfield lighting, explaining the relevant concepts to consider for AGL solutions developed, installed and maintained at airports. Please foresee 2 hours to complete this course.  Enjoy the learning experience!

  • Summary The first part of the  AGL Design Course , an online program for airfield designers, is structured to build a comprehensive understanding of Aeronautical Ground Lights. Please note the module complexity is limited in order to suit the online format. Some modules will be dealt with in-depth during the in-person online and classroom sessions. It begins with foundational visual aids such as aeronautical beacons and wind direction indicators, detailing their operational necessity and characteristics. The curriculum then progresses to detailed examinations of various approach systems, covering their application, location, light characteristics, and circuitry across different categories. Subsequent modules extensively cover runway perimeter lighting, including edge, end, and threshold lights, outlining their purpose and colour coding. Specialised runway lighting elements like centre line and touchdown zone lights are then explored, followed by a thorough exploration of taxiway lighting systems. The course integrates critical safety measures, such as stop bars and runway guard lights, and concludes by addressing other essential airfield visual aids, providing a holistic view of aerodrome illumination and guidance systems. A short test with survey must be completed before the webinar session. Then after the webinar session the access to the second online part will be granted.
  • The second part of the  AGL Design Course , an online program for airfield designers, is structured to build a comprehensive understanding of Aeronautical Ground Lights. Please note the module complexity is limited in order to suit the online format. Some modules will be dealt with in-depth during the in-person online and classroom sessions.  This part specifically covers Visual Docking Guidance Systems, as well as guidance signs used for location and routing. Additionally, it describes comprehensive safety components like Obstacle Lighting , Autonomous Runway Incursion Warning Systems (ARIWS) and Runway Status Lighting (RWSL) , the high-level operational structure of the Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS) which integrates surveillance, routing, and safety support, and stringent maintenance objectives defining serviceability requirements for lighting during low visibility operations. A short test with survey must be completed before the webinar session. Then after the webinar session the access to the second online part will be granted.
